How Long Does Custom Jewelry Manufacturing Take from Brief to Shipment?
Custom jewelry lead time is a sequence, not one factory-wide number. The schedule depends on design clarity, sample approval, material and plating choices, packaging, order quantity, and inspection. This article shows buyers where time is really spent and how to protect a launch date.

Custom jewelry does not have one honest lead-time number until the product scope is clear. A catalog item, a modified catalog item, and a new mold follow different paths. The practical schedule usually has five checkpoints: RFQ clarification, design or CAD, sample approval, bulk production, and inspection/packing. Material availability, plating requirements, order size, packaging, and revision speed can move each checkpoint.

Where the lead time goes
1. RFQ clarification
The first stage is not just “send a price.” The factory checks the product type, dimensions, quantity per style, material, finish, components, packaging, and destination. If a photo leaves the clasp, thickness, or back side unclear, the factory must ask questions or make assumptions. A quick reply from the buyer can save several rounds of messages.
For the fastest start, provide a reference image, approximate dimensions, target quantity, preferred material, finish, packaging need, and target market. If you do not know the exact specification, say so. A clear unknown is easier to resolve than a hidden assumption.
2. Design review and CAD
Existing catalog styles may need only a feasibility check and selected changes. A new shape may require CAD, mold or tooling, stone-setting review, and a discussion about thickness and wear. Founder-led design review is useful here because the issue is not only whether a shape can be made; it is whether the SKU makes sense for the buyer’s market and price position.
Ask for the approval points: drawing approval, material confirmation, finish reference, and sample instruction. Do not approve a drawing while assuming that the factory will later infer a different thickness or clasp.
3. Sampling and revisions
Sampling proves the physical interpretation. It can reveal a heavy pendant, a sharp edge, a clasp that feels weak, a stone that sits too high, or a plating color that looks different under retail lighting. Each revision has its own time, especially when the mold, CAD, or finish must change.
Set a response rule for approvals. For example, agree that comments will be returned in one consolidated list rather than scattered messages. Ask the supplier to confirm how the sample schedule changes when a revision is requested.
4. Bulk production
Bulk time depends on the number of SKUs, total quantity, material preparation, casting or stamping, polishing, assembly, plating, stone setting, and quality checks. A ten-style collection is not automatically ten times slower than one style, but each style can add setup, component, and inspection work.
Do not confuse production time with calendar time. Factory holidays, courier transit, material purchase, and approval waiting time sit outside the hands-on production estimate. A useful production plan separates factory work from buyer-controlled waiting.
5. Inspection, packing, and shipment
Final inspection may cover dimensions, appearance, clasp function, stone setting, plating consistency, logo position, quantity, and packaging. If the buyer requires test documents or SKU-level records, those should be discussed before production, not after the cartons are ready.

Use a milestone table, not one date
Ask the factory to list: RFQ confirmation, drawing or CAD approval, sample dispatch, sample feedback deadline, bulk start, in-process check, final inspection, packing, and shipment handover. Each milestone should have an owner. If a date depends on a buyer approval, mark it as buyer-dependent.
Freeze the specification before bulk work
The most expensive delay is changing a key specification after production starts. Freeze the base material, dimensions, finish, components, stone details, logo, packaging, quantity, and acceptable visual standards. If one SKU must remain flexible, separate it from the rest of the order.
Protect the critical path
Material and packaging decisions often run in parallel with sampling, but only if their specifications are clear. Send packaging artwork early. Confirm whether a finish reference is physical, digital, or a named color. Keep one approval file with the final version, not a trail of contradictory chat messages.
